PETER SCHUSTER, artist

Peter first picked up a paintbrush in the year 2000 and has since gone on to become recognised and appreciated for his distinctive style in both Australia and overseas. His no-nonsense approach to art resonates particularly well with those people who form the subject for most of Peter’s artwork – rural Australians.

Peter is perhaps best recognised for his sepia tone watercolours usually depicting country people going about everyday tasks or interacting in a warm and candid manner. It is Peter’s ability to capture and preserve these supposedly normal moments with such warmth that makes his artwork truly compelling.

Each of these watercolour paintings is meticulously drafted on custom-made paper which Peter developed in consultation with Blue Lake Paper Mill at Mount Gambier, South Australia. The paper has a life of its own and serves to complement the subject matter through texture and appearance.

The archival nature of the paper and the watercolour paints that Peter uses helps ensure that the artworks will stand the test of time and become valuable records of the rural way of life at the time they were painted. In the same way that we now look back on sepia stained photographs of prior generations, future generations will be able to reflect on days gone by through Peter’s paintings. His eye for detail ensures that even the most inconspicuous but iconic details of the Akubra hat, Old Timer knife pouch or R.M. Williams boots are preserved.

To add to these figurative watercolours, Peter is also well known for his dramatic landscapes in oil and acrylic. Low horizons and striking colours create the impression of a vast and untamed landscape and resonate superbly with inland Australia.

Peter’s original artworks are complemented by a range of Limited Edition Prints, each of which has been personally signed and numbered by the artist. These prints present an affordable option for people to share in Peter’s artwork.

Following many successful exhibitions, Peter continues to paint from his property near Dubbo, NSW, he is often called upon to undertake paintings on commission for individuals and corporates.

Peter’s works are represented in rural, regional and metropolitan galleries throughout Australia and are held in private and corporate collections around the world. His work has appreciated notably and is now being keenly sought by investors.
